An advertiser asks the "get paid" company if they will send out e-mail to members for $.06 per e-mail sent. They agree, and start sending them out, with a pay rate of $.05 per e-mail. At the end of the period the advertiser finds that a total of 20,000,000 e-mails have been send to the members, so they pay the "get paid" company $1,200,000 (20,000,000x $.06 = $1,200,000). Then the "get paid" company sends out the payments to the members. All the members combined received 20,000,000 e-mails, so after looking at each member's stats and paying $.05 per e-mail received, they end up paying out $1,000,000 (20,000,000 x $.05 = $1,000,000). The profits for that period for the "get paid" company is $200,000 ($1,200,000-$1,000,000=$200,000). All the members combined made $1,000,000, each making different amounts depending on the number of e-mails received.

That was an example of how a "get paid for e-mails" company might work their program. The other program work about the same, only rather than paying for e-mails receive they might pay for number of hours surfed, or amount of surveys completed.
